Dragon Ball: Piccolo Jr. Saga by Akira Toriyama

Dragon Ball: Piccolo Jr. Saga by Akira Toriyama

This review covers chapters 162-194 (Volumes 14-16) of the Dragon Ball Manga.

Goodreads Synopsis
This saga covers Goku's training with Kami, and the World Martial Arts Tournament against Piccolo Jr., the reincarnation of King Piccolo.
The end of the Dragon Ball series concludes with another Strongest Under the Heavens tournament! While it might seem like this type of story is getting old -- and a lot of what happens does repeat -- it is quick paced and full of old faces that we have wanted to see again. In particular is Chi-Chi who makes Goku keep his childhood promise to marry her, which was sweet and endearing.

The characters continue to develop well, as do their strengths which is seen in the action sequences, and the stories are just as entertaining, even though this is the third Strongest Under the Heavens Tournament we have seen. And to ensure that we tie up loose ends, the final of the third Strongest Under the Heavens tournament is Piccolo Jr vs three-time finalist Goku.

Their fight, like most of Goku’s fights over the sereis, has more to it than just throwing punches and kicks at each other -- there is magic, trickery, wit, and even some comedy (nice to see that is making it's way back into the series). It’s a fantastic fight though and thoroughly enjoyable to read. It also results in Goku finally winning the Strongest Under the Heavens tournament and alls well that ends well.

That’s the most perfect ending to a series I’ve ever read. But now onto Dragon Ball Z and the 26 volumes of perfection that it offers.

Overall: 4/5 for this saga! I really enjoyed this Strongest Under the Heavens tournament because it felt more realistic than the first one we saw and had stronger opponents and a fun mix of everything that made this series so great.
